Back in the Game
As early as the 18th century, before Château Lafite and Romanée Conti ever planted a vine, the sweet Muscat wines of South Africa were highly prized in Europe. The next two centuries were not as kind to their wine industry, when grapes were used mostly to produce cheap brandy, and the policies of apartheid isolated the country from the rest of the world. Today, South Africa is the 10th largest producer in the world, with quality that rivals many better-known regions.
